DESCRIPTION:Scroll down for Georgian \nOnur Ceritoğlu´s lecture tells us about ‘Çıkmacılar’ (removers)\, who salvage to be demolished buildings for reuse and recycle purposes in Istanbul. Their existence can be traced back to informal urbanization\, Gecekondu (nightlanders) since the 1960s. Looking at the urban transformation geography of Istanbul\, Çıkmacılar who try to exist at the intersection of Global and local economy can be discussed in the scope of gecekondu building culture and totalitarian urbanisation mechanisms that instrumentalise re-building by demolitions.\nThe capitalist system tends to create and instrumentalise these social infrastructures and keep them in the periphery for its benefit. Not only Çıkmacılar supply raw material for formal mass production but also they open up an unregulated economy for second-hand building materials. \n————– \nOnur Ceritoğlu is a visual artist and an academic\, trained as an architect. Based in Istanbul\, he employs drawing\, photography\, video\, and text to enquire into urban phenomena\, regenerating them in the context of socially engaged art practices and installations. His ongoing PhD research in TU Darmstadt is based on scrap dealers [Çıkmacılar] in the urban reconstruction of Istanbul as social infrastructures who salvage to be demolished buildings for reuse and recycling purposes. SUMMARY:Circular Economy-Mapping Session
DESCRIPTION:During the Circular Economy Mapping Week CEC Organizers will voluntarily set up group sessions to map the circular initiatives in their cities (60+city). The overall objective of the session is to bring together circular enthusiasts to discuss and learn about the latest circular initiatives happening in their cities\, as well as to map out circular initiatives taking place globally and make this information available online and free for all.\n\n\n \n\n\nDuring the mapping session\, participants will get information about CEC activities and they will contribute to expand this global net- work. Groups of 4 people will identify circular initiatives in five pre- selected sectors. (e.g. manufacturing\, textile\, etc.). Based on group discussions\, each group will fill in the grid and present to other group members.\n\n\n \n\n\nToday we have a linear ‘take\, make\, dispose’ economic model that relies on large quantities of cheap\, easily accessible materials and energy\, and is a model that is reaching its physical limits. Circular Economy opens a world of opportunity to rethink and redesign the way we make stuff.
